Elements of Setting a Goal
Short-Term, Mid-Term, and Long-Term Goals
Establish goals that relate to phases of your training. These goals can relate to time (three months, one year, three years), performance (five-mile run, ten-mile run, marathon) or both (five-mile run at three months).

Once you've met your goals, you must set new goals in place. Most people put much time and effort into achieving their goals; but once they have accomplished their desired goal, they lose focus because they no longer have anything to strive for.

Short-term Goal -
Your short-term goal should be something that you can easily and realistically attain. You need to experience the pride of reaching your first milestone.
Mid-term Goal -
Your mid-term goal needs to be more challenging than the short-term goal; but, once again, it must be realistic. This goal needs to support your efforts in achieving your long-term goal.
Long-term Goal -
Your long-term goal should be something like running a triathlon or reaching a desired, healthy weight. Remember to have future goals in place once you've conquered any goal.
